Kirsten Chursinoff
Artist’s
Bio
When
creating with textiles there are many different techniques and materials
which may be combined in various ways. Kirsten is fascinated by
the effects that can be achieved when layers of fabric, stitches
and beads are built up to create interesting details and textures.
She has a passion for details and rarely stops until every possible
space is embellished in some way.
Embroidery is a form of meditation for her. Whenever possible she
uses her hands rather than a machine to decorate and hold pieces
of fabric together. The stitches can be built up and added in endless
possibilities. She also makes beads, and dyes or paints some of
her own fabrics.
Much
of her design inspiration comes from historical textiles. She loves
both richly coloured embroideries and faded tapestries from times
gone by. It is always a challenge for her to create the illusion
of ancient work using new materials.
The series of garden themed embroideries combines Kirsten's love
of nature with her love for textiles. Her primary source of inspiration
is the vast world of wild growing things. She also looks to the
elaborately embroidered fashions and decorative textiles from the
past.
The pieces are layered with materials using a variety of techniques.
She approaches the designs as if they are paintings and chooses
the subtle colors from a palette of threads, fabrics, beads and
yarn.
