Aleksandra Kalinic
Artist’s
Bio
Aleksandra
studied landscape architecture in her native Belgrade, Yugoslavia.
But she discovered clay and her life took a different direction.
A ceramics course at the Museum of Ethnography enabled her in 1995
to be admitted to the Belgrade Arts University, Department of Ceramics.
In 1997, she helped with the restoration of the façade of
the Serbian Orthodox Monastery, built in 1355. During this time
she lived at the monastery and discovered a deep respect for ancient
cultures.
Aleksandra
immigrated to Canada in 2001.
Aleksandra's
work is mostly with mid-range white stoneware or porcelain. The
pieces are slab built, decorated with engobes, porcelain slip, some
of them with oxides (copper & cobalt), fired in oxidation to
Cone 6 or 8. She has exhibited in such diverse places as Sydney,
Australia; Buenos Aires, Argentina; and Belgrade, Yugoslavia.
"
Boxes are a symbol for the past and memories. My interest in ceramics
includes surface texture and colour, besides the form. I use these
elements as irresistible symbols to communicate and show my inspirations
- the inner energy and its diverse and constant movement through
the universe, its delicate flow and interactions between individuals,
and between individual and nature".
