Jane Kenyon

Artist’s Bio

Some years ago, Jane Kenyon left a ten year family medical practice in Saskatoon to devote full time to her artistry in weaving and other fibre arts, and to her two children.

She acknowledges that art training would have better suited her aptitudes. However even as she practiced medicine, she began taking courses in weaving, spinning and silk dyeing, and later in painting and printmaking. She also joined weaver' guilds and began showing her work in exhibitions and galleries.

She recently completed a three year embroidery course in Coupeville, WA, through the London-based City and Guilds Embroidery School.

"Textiles are the unsung heroines of cultural explorations. Worked over the centuries by the hands of women, a culture's textiles provide a rich aesthetic, functional and historical significance to that culture. Archeologists and historians gather very valuable information about a culture from remnants of its textiles. Yet, the women who worked those unique fabrics are rarely applauded or appreciated for their contribution. I feel a deep connection to these women as I stitch, working with my hands as my foremothers did." Jane Kenyon
