Mikel Lefler
Artist’s
Bio
Mikel
Lefler has been designing jewellery since 1999. As she was finishing
her Bachelor of Science degree at Simon Fraser University she took
an entomology course and fell in love with the beauty of insects.
She
started working in a honeybee research lab and cast resin embedded
with insects. Her father taught her the process of working with
resin, which he has been perfecting for the last thirty years.
She
began making a small decorative table with embedded dragonflies
and from there she became devoted to her craft. She took silversmithing
classes and combined the art of casting resin with silversmithing
to create her line of insect jewellery as well as other decorative
items such a as small tables, stools and mirrors. Due to her process
no two pieces of her jewellery are alike, each one is unique and
special.
She
named her company after it's product, "Bijoux du Monde"
or "Jewels of the World." She strives to create jewellery
that illuminates the detail, intricacy and beauty of every insect
in a creative and functional way.
Avoid
placing your necklace near strong heat or intense light as the material
may become slightly tacky and the insect may develop a filmy appearance.
Light scratches on the resin may be buffed off with a vigorous polishing
using Brasso, on a soft cloth. The sterling silver may be cleaned
using silver polish.
