Vincent Massey

Artist’s Bio

Vincent Massey has been working in the ceramic medium since he began his studies at the West Surrey College of Art and Design in 1978. He went on to apprentice with Wayne Ngan of Hornby Island BC, and then returned to England to study with Michael Cardew. While in England he completed a BA in Ceramics with honors, and began building and firing wood fire kilns, experimenting with many different techniques.

He returned to Canada in 1982, and began to produce high fire stoneware, setting up a new studio and home in Whistler BC. Throughout his career, he has had various shows and has taught many classes focusing on wood and gas fired stoneware.

His current work is mainly stoneware, and is completed using a styrofoam mold process. His work is usually large and functional, with extruded handles and rims. The glazes vary, and in most cases he uses a wax resist process to combine colors on his pieces. His common designs include large platters (some with a fish pattern), and originally designed sushi plates.

His work is found in collections all over the world.
