Veronica Graham
Artist’s
Bio
"In
my wearable art, my tendency is to play with the emotional state
of the wearer. She is adorning her material body and at the same
time satisfying a universal longing for the embellishment of its
intangible counterpart: the human spirit. I am interested in the
spiritual and theatrical potential of ornamentation. "
Veronica
studied Women's Studies and Religion at Concordia University, where
she continued her investigation into women's textile and craft production,
and its place in sacred art. Her education brought her to Hornby
Island and an apprenticeship in felt making with Alma Schofield.
Felt making and hand dying has become an important point of departure
for her, both in her wearable art and in her figurative sculpture.
The sheep's fleeces that she uses grow on the sheep that graze in
her and neighbouring fields. Her relationship to her environment
compels her to use natural media; plants, branches, grasses and
bones are woven, stitched and bundled into human and animal forms,
honouring the magical variation that makes up our world. It has
become an important pursuit, through appliqué, embroidery
and embellishment to bring the sky down into her pieces.
