Process InformationHandmade paper starts with a careful selection of various fibers, their controlled cooking, rinsing and beating as well as individual sheet forming with a mold and deckle. The damp papers are pressed to release the excess water and brushed onto a wall to dry. Marbling in Turkey is called EBRU meaning cloud, so marbling was sometimes referred to as CLOUD ART. In Japan marbling is referred to as SUMINAGASHI meaning ink floating. This ancient traditional craft is a technique of patterning colors floating on liquid and capturing the image by making a contact mono-print on paper or cloth. The success of marbling depends on the use of color, while adjusting chemistry and paint to create the imagery. The movement of color is controlled using specific tools to arrange the hues in preconceived or spontaneous patterns. A balance of artistry, technique, craftsmanship, alchemy and magic results in a traditional yet contemporary art form. Candace Thayer-Coe |
