Artist’s Statement

After realizing that I didn't want to be a scientist or work in the world of nine to five I have discovered that being an artist is difficult but overwhelmingly rewarding work. I use my science degree and my life long creative urge to create my singular line of insect jewellery. I strive to produce a unique line of creative and functional jewellery and collectibles that are broadly appealing. I believe my jewellery pays homage to the enormous and diverse world of insects, truly the jewels of the world.

I am a West Coast artist who combines fine artistic skills as a jeweller with a scientific background to produce beautifully crafted sterling silver and resin insect jewellery and collectibles.

At an early age I developed an appreciation for the natural world. Based on this interest I studied biology, including entomology, at Simon Fraser University in Burnaby, BC. After graduating with a Bachelor of Science I worked in their honeybee lab, further sparking my interest in the insect world. I now combine this knowledge and creativity to create my distinct line of jewellery.

I use a glorious array of real insects including butterflies, dragonflies, beetles, spiders and more. My father taught me how to work with resin and the value of hand fabricating each piece I make. After experimenting with resin I took private silversmithing classes with BC jeweller Barrie Edwards and immediately loved what the combination of the two media produced.

I design and create each unique piece, setting and sanding all gems by hand. The clear and colored resins illuminate the detail, intricacy and beauty of every insect and the sterling silver designs make my jewellery something truly unique.

I began working with these techniques in 1999 and have since then made this a full time career. My work is carried in numerous locations in BC and Alberta. In addition I have attended over 20 exhibitions and have been featured in print, radio and TV.
