Process InformationI am currently working on one-of-a-kind sculptural cups. They are made with various types of stoneware and sizes range from 4" to 8" in height and 2.5" - 5' in width. The process of making these pieces is long and labour intensive. Several hours are spent on each piece to create their own personality. Each piece consists of 3 or 4 parts that are thrown on the wheel, altered, handbuilt, extruded, and assembled. I alter the movement of the throwing lines inside the piece and create lines outside the piece with various tools so there is a feeling of constant movement. Some surfaces are textured to create a sense of depth. A variety of slips are applied to the exterior surface and interior is
glazed. They are then salt-fired to cone 9 (1280 degrees Celsius) for
about twenty hours. Some pieces have also been wood/salt/soda-fired.
