Process Information

Fibre artist Ulrieke Benner creates a myriad of colourful, imaginative arts works, some wearable, some purely visual, but each is unique with a strong sense of design and colour.

Her fibre wall pieces start with colour and an idea. Colourful fabrics are laid out on a background fabric, and as the work progresses she adds or subtracts fabrics which work with the growing conversation between herself and the piece. The fabrics are hand or machine stitched, appliqued, and embroidered into place.

Her fine merino wool scarves and hats utilize the ancient art of handmade felt. An artist's touch as well as water, soap, and friction create a fabric, which is light, airy, and incredibly soft. The patterns are artistic compositions utilizing intense or subtle colourations. The creative process involves dyed fibres, overdying, discharge, and printed surface design. The hats are slowly shaped on spheres or flat templates.
