Ulrieke
Benner derives her inspiration from the natural environment around her
on Salt Spring Island.
In her textile art, her
explosive use of colour reflects her sense of playfulness and
exuberance. Her textile paintings combine a variety of techniques;
including applique, stitching, beads, and embroidery. She combines dyed
and painted silk with other fibres, creating textile paintings which
she describes as "contemplative". Her abstract, and vibrantly coloured
artwork enables each viewer to bring his or her own experiences into
the piece and leaves it open to his/her own interpretation.
Ulrieke also transforms her
inner vision into innovative and whimsical felted yardage, garments,
accessories, hats, scarves, shawls and bags.
Of special note is her
unique nuno felting technique, which takes felting in a whole new
direction, both esthetically and with a high degree of superb
craftsmanship. She creates felt, which is light, airy, and very soft.
Each art piece is totally unique, and no two pieces are exactly alike.
Her hats are one-of-a-kind
and are moulded and shaped, bent by Ulrieke's will and expertise. The
hats can be subtle, or vibrant, but always sophisticated and stylish,
and each has its own character. As well, they endure beautifully
through all climates, making them perfect for any weather.
Trained in Germany, and
the United States, Ulrieke Benner has exhibited and sold her wall art,
and wearable felted one-of-a-kind pieces throughout the East Coast of
the United States, internationally in Germany, Austria, Italy, and the
Netherlands.
